Perumal meets Wiggy

The first Chief Minister of the merged North and East Province, Annamalai Varatharaja Perumal and the demerged Northern Province's first Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswarn met in Jaffna on Friday (17).
Varatharaja Perumal who had arrived from India has expressed his intention of entering politics by stating that he would act independently without aligning any political party during his meeting with Chief Minister Wigneswaran.

The first Chief Minister of the merged North and East Province, Annamalai Varatharaja Perumal and the demerged Northern Province's first Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswarn met in Jaffna on Friday (17).
Varatharaja Perumal who had arrived from India has expressed his intention of entering politics by stating that he would act independently without aligning any political party during his meeting with Chief Minister Wigneswaran.

The meeting between Wigneswaran and Varatharaja Perumal lasted for nearly one hour at the office of the Northern Chief Minister.
Wigneswarn also expressed his views on the present political atmosphere in the country as well as on the governance of the Northern Provincial Council to the former Chief Minister.

Varatharaja Perumal, who was one of the founding members of the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) was an academic attached to the University of Jaffna prior to his involvement with the EPRLF which was led by K. Pathmanabha, who was assassinated by the LTTE for accepting the Indo-Lanka Accord.
Varatharaja Perumal took his oaths as Chief Minister of merged North and East Provincial Council before late President J.R. Jeyewardene in 1988 and remained in the position till 1990.

Varatharaja Perumal resigned from his position as the Chief Minister in 1990 following the withdrawal of the IPKF in 1990.
Following the threats from the LTTE, Indian Government provided asylum for Varatharaja Perumal and his family in the State of Rajasthan with the maximum security provided by the India's elite 'Black Cat Commandos'.
