A group of Jaffna students who are following aviation studies have appealed to the Indian Government to build an international airport in Jaffna.
The 30 students who are currently on a study tour in Tamil Nadu in an interview with 'Vikatan', a leading Tamil magazine in the state have said that India must assist in building an international airport in Jaffna in order to have a prosperous aviation industry in South India.

The Jaffna students pointing out the role played by India in reviving the train service to Jaffna mentioned that as far as the international aviation was concerned, Jaffna has good potential. All airports in Sri Lanka could be further improved to international standards to make the island nation a healthy aviation hub in Asia.
Commenting on the post-war situation in the Northern Province, the students said that the cost of living is high with unemployment a problem.

According to the students a large number of graduates from the University of Jaffna are unemployed.
"By creating more job opportunities in the North, the youth from the province could be prevented from leaving in search of employment and greener pastures abroad. India should also assist the Lankan Government in creating more job opportunities by making more investments in the province," the students said.

Commenting on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Jaffna, the students said that they were very happy that Modi visited Jaffna, making him the first Indian Premier to visit the region and the visit has proved India's commitment towards helping the people in the North.
The Indian excursion of the Northern students engaged in aviation studies at a private institution in Jaffna was sponsored by the Indian Consulate in Jaffna.
