TNA Briefs UN On War Crimes

TNA Briefs UN On War Crimes

By Camelia Nathaniel
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has briefed the visiting United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, Pablo de Greiff, on incidents related to alleged war crimes said to have taken place during the war.
Pablo de Greiff met with representatives of the TNA at the Taj Samudra hotel in Colombo last week. TNA leader R. Sambanthan, parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran, Selvam Adaikalanathan, and M. A. Sumanthiran participated in the meeting.
Speaking to The Sunday Leader TNA parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran said that they had discussed several matters during the hour-long meeting, including the present situation in the country, and the events that had taken place earlier with regard to human rights and the current situation.
He added that the TNA expects the United Nations Special Rapporteur to hand over his report to the UN based on his findings and meetings held.
Greiff, who arrived in Sri Lanka last Sunday (March 29), for a six-day visit on the invitation of the Sri Lankan government, also held closed-door discussions with the Chief Minister of the Northern Province C. V. Wigneswaran.
It is believed that the Chief Minister had handed over a copy of the recently adopted Northern Provincial Council (NPC) resolution on genocide to the Special Rapporteur.
The resolution adopted by the NPC in February calls for an international investigation into alleged acts of genocide committed against the Tamils during the war.
