CHENNAI:Vocal Lankan Tamil leader and Northern Province Councillor MK Shivajilingam on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be visiting Sri Lanka in a few days, to take steps for a permanent political solution to the ethnic issue jointly facilitated, mediated, and underwritten by India, EU, US, and the UN.
The former MP also urged Modi to help provide immediate relief to the Tamils by persuading Colombo to demilitarise the North-East and return all the land forcibly taken from Tamils. Besides, Modi should help release all the Tamil political prisoners and information on all those who surrendered, imprisoned, and disappeared during the end of the war.
Welcoming Modi to Sri Lanka, Shivajilingam said, “We are hopeful that your history making visit, evoking parallels to the visit by Mahathma Gandhi to Jaffna on November 27, 1927, will further strengthen our relationships for this new century.”
Observing that the Tamil people did not believe in the 13th Amendment leading to an equitable political solution, he said Modi should initiate steps towards a lasting political solution.
“The solution, at the minimum, must be based on the Oslo Declaration where both the Tamil side and Sri Lankan side agreed on December 5, 2002 to explore political solution based on a federal structure which was welcomed by the International Community. PM Ranil Wickeramasinghe was also the Prime Minister of the government that agreed to the Oslo Declaration in Norway”, Shivajilingam added.
Stating that the Tamil people in the North-East as well as their brethren in Tamil Nadu and  the Diaspora overwhelmingly support ed and called for an independent UN investigation on Lanka, Shivajilingam said and urged India to change its position of opposing the UN probe and support it as that would be the only hope of Tamils for justice, accountability and protection.
Shivajilingam also urged Modi to send Tamil speaking doctors, and English and IT teachers from Tamil Nadu to help the Tamils rebuild their livelihood. He has also sought Modi’s help in solving the issues faced by the fishermen from both India and Lanka, creating closer economic integration between Tamil Nadu and the Tamil speaking Northern and Eastern Provinces and in restoring the ferry service between Thalaimannar and Rameswaram, and also the air-link from Tamil Nadu to Palaly and Trincomalee.

  • Sri Lanka's Tamils are right to seek New Delhi's help. It shows they now have a good grasp of international dimensions. India's Interest in Sri Lanka is driven by geopolitics, Given that Colombo has always pursued a foreign policy that was anti-Indian (DS Senanayake from 1948 to Ranil Wickramasinghe today) , it's in New Delhi's interest to support the Tamils. This was the advice proffered by Professor Sumanta Bose (Professor of International Relations at LSE) in 2007 at a conference on International "Dimensions of the Conflict in Sri Lanka" held in Switzerland. Such a support will also satisfy the 70 million Tamils in South India.

Sri Lankan Tamils are the number one fools and cry babies in the world. They ask India to safeguard them. They are unable to understand
        1) it is India that created an armed group among Tamils to control Sri Lanka to safeguard Indian interests
        2) When the armed group grew out of Indian control they reduced their support
        3) The IPKF they sent killed more number of Tamils in a short time until 1990
        4) They provided all assistance to Sri Lankan forces during the final stages of war
        5) India will never allow Tamils to have a separate state
        6) Problem in Sri Lanka is advantageous to India as it uses the Tamil factor as a control switch

this man article proof to the entire world that even with in the Tamil politicians in the north and east do not carry common idea. Few days ago chief minister of north province requested from Indian prime minister to full implement 13A ,this man is asking some think 2002 happen with terrorist leader to stop killing. this is a country not part of India in order to decide where plan can be landed and ferry service can be operated is not subject matters of India that must take care by sri lanka prime minister. If all Tamil asking time to time sun and moon, so this matter only can settle by constitution of the country not by joining with Tamil Nadu. there are lot of qualified doctors are in north and east.

Why on earth should we expect India, US, EU and UN to underwrite a "solution" to this problem? What about reliable friends of Sri Lanka such as China, Maldives, Pakistan, Russia, Cuba, Japan etc ?
Also, will India apply similar solutions to their Kashmir problem and get the US, EU and UN to underwrite it?
Get real Mr Sivajilingam . Please respect the heritage, culture and historical truth about the majority community which suffered so much under the Colonial powers and now trying to solve those problems left behind by these colonial nations.
