First nab thieves at home - Susil
"We are not against nabbing thieves, but first nab thieves at home for whom the control of state finances have been handed over," UPFA MP Susil Premajayantha said.
He was participating at the inauguration of a three day residential workshop for women public representatives in local government institutional level organised by the SLFP Women Front at the SLIDA yesterday. Premajayantha accused that the government was trying to cover up the misdeeds of the Central Bank Governor with false reports, while apprehending others by establishing Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) issuing a gazette notification under the Police Ordinance. He said a case was in progress at the High Court over an alleged foreign reserves fraud by the Finance Minister.
"There were reports that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had siphoned off USD 1.8 billion. Just imagine if he is to collect such a large sum, in way of commission or by some other means, how much of development work he should have carried out in the country? If we calculate the commission as five percent, then there must have been investment running to over USD 36 billion. In reality the value of the total investments during his period was less than USD 5 billion," he said.
While commenting on the differences of opinions currently seen in the party, Premajayantha said it was normal.
"However, some are giving statements to the media on behalf of the party stating that they would remove several teeth of the party. We would not let that happen. We had always been with the party. Those who left the party and came back have no right to issue statements on behalf of the party," he said.
