Azath Salley rouses BBS anger

The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) requested Islamic leaders to restrain Azath Salley before his 'barking' leads to a Sinhala Buddhist backlash. The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) requested Islamic leaders to restrain Azath Salley before his 'barking' leads to a Sinhala Buddhist backlash. General Secretary of the BBS Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera made this request in response to National Executive Council member, Azath Salley's comments, regarding the Nugegoda rally last Wednesday (18), which was held to demand the return of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to politics.

Gnanasara Thera stated that his organization had no hand in the Nugegoda rally which was organized by Pro-Mahida Rajapaksa supporters. However, Council member Azath Salley, who said he would resign from his post if people do not show up for it, made another statement saying that the BBS had manipulated people into participating. Gnansara Thera said that councillor Azath Salley has forgotten who the Sinhala Buddhists are and added that; "if they threaten us we will be forced to react accordingly."
"If they are bold enough to call us racists, don't their actions make them racists too? What if this leads to another youth unrest, similar to what happened in Aluthgama? We were the ones who tried stopping it, but they were the ones who threw stones and started the entire thing," he said.
Salley was not available for comment.
